The Huronia Food Trail - What's in it for Kids
The best of our child memories, the ones that shape us and stay with us forever include all 5 senses. Vacations we remember the clearest are ones where we can remember more than just what we saw. When travelling with kids, parents should remember this and while most kids like the usual suspects of vacation activities, it is also a fun idea to be a bit of a foodie when visiting new places, especially if parents have that interest as well.
There are many benefits to taking your children on the Huronia Food Trail when visiting the areas of Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay Townships. Children NEED to know where their food came from in order to appreciate and connect with it. It doesn't hurt that they meet the hardworking farmers who work 365 days a year to feed people. Farmers appreciate the love and are always happy to share their passion...and the work! Children will develop an appreciation for different foods, learn about seasonality and connect with food in a healthy way that will stay with them for life.
The Huronia area is located on Georgian Bay and is rich in farm land growing some of Ontario's best produce, maple products and also raising some delicious well-cared for meats. The local food culture is strong and many restaurants support the movement giving visitors a great chance to try the local fare prepared by talented chefs. The commonality on the tour is local food passion. Anyone involved in this has a passion for what they do, whether they grow the food or cook and entertain with it. This infectuous passion is a great thing that will surely inspire a new generation of growers, chefs and restauranteurs.
~It's all in the FAMILY~ |
*Note the tour materials are bilingual, available also in French.
Photos and Tour Highlights:
The tour for us began at the town dock in Midland. Under a bright blue sky and beside beautiful calm waters we met Adriana, organizer of the Midland Farmers' and Artisans' Market. The market is large with over 60 ventors at an ideal location for a fun family outing. Kids will love the toy and kids fare artisans, some weeks there is live entertainment and the market is a quick jaunt to town docks to see boats, including the large passenger cruiser, the Miss Midland. There are samples to eat like honey, bbq sauce, baked goods as well as produce and meats. If you're renting a cottage in the area, this is a great place to pick up what you need for an entire local meal! Be sure to stop in front of the Tourism Information Centre and take your picture with the "Little TooT" boat.
From here, we took a long drive out to the country to the peaceful Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre. Yes, it is a quiet retreat centre and children are most welcome! Really the key here is simple, connecting with nature and kids have no problems with that. The buildings and grounds are breathtakingly beautiful, full of wildflowers, dragonflies and on this day, sunshine! The food is prepared on-site and is organic and local whenever possible.
Maple Butter! Sweet and smooth! |
The restaurants on the tour are all child friendly and all offer local food on their menus. Most also sell or make use of other local fare like photography, art, flowers and more. Food adventurous kids will get to try foods like lamb, duck, elk - one stop even fed us pancakes with bacon IN them! A few of the shops, Ciboulette et Cie, Wendy B's Fine Foods, Midland Cultural Centre, Mad Micheal's BBQ and Bakery has prepared foods for take-home / cottage / boat.
Naturally made, with local ingredient - kids love them! |
These family businesses would welcome the opportunity to share with your family what they do. The tour is full of learning and fun for kids and at the right time of year, I know every kid loves to eat a pint of berries right out of the container in the backseat. For this reason, it is doubtful you'll hear any complaining while taking your children on an adventure along the Huronia Food Trail.
It's Ready! |
Come TASTE what the excitement is all about it. The tour will definitely bring out the kid in you!

Say "HOLIDAY" - Professional Kids Photography tips from a PRO!
Family vacations go by in a heartbeat and what we're left with are memories, tourist knick-knacks and terabytes worth of photos on our hard drives and smartphones.
Holiday photos can be frustrating for parents. From active kids who won't stop moving to shiny bright sunny days at the beach, it can be tricky for an average parent to land a decent shot, even with all the marvels in today's photography technology!
We asked a good friend and professional kids photographer to help us out with some tips when photographing kids outdoors on the move having fun!
Kelly Moss owns Kelly Moss Photography located in downtown Midland. Kelly's specialties are children, babies, outdoor and natural light photography...she's also a busy Mom to two cute girls! Kelly's session services are by appointment but you can also visit her shop on King Street to see her gallery of recent work and browse a variety of photo based gifts.
Great kid’s photography really is as easy as 1,2,3! As, a mom, and a professional photographer, I understand the challenges of getting “that favorite shot” of young kids. Here are 3 simple tricks that I use to help make it happen.
1. Let kids be kids.
I long ago gave up trying to make anyone between the ages of 0-4 look at a camera. Instead, I let go of my ideal photo: clean, smiling child sitting still and looking straight into the lens; and decided to let the kids have fun - their version of fun. A typical session often starts with the kids hamming it up, and me negotiating a few “nice pictures” for every 3-4 goofy pictures. Watch out for 4 year olds, they are particularly tough negotiators, your odds are more likely to be in the 6-1 range. Keeping kids active through the session helps keep it “fun”!
2. Lighting
Great photography is really about great light. Light brings out colour, gives objects dimension and depth, and allows your camera to function optimally. Knowing the source and direction of your light will have an amazing impact on your photography. When shooting outside, choose a location that is shaded. A slightly shaded setting will allow for even exposure with no harsh shadows and prevent squinting. Take advantage of the sunset hour when the light is low and the sky is full of colour.
3. Change your viewpoint.
We often shoot pictures of children from our “taller parent perspective” and look down at kids. Try getting lower, to their level, and shoot straight on.
Kelly Moss Photography is located at 257 King Street in beautiful waterfront Midland. Kelly specializes in natural light portraits, and particularly enjoys photographing children and babies. Her sessions have a relaxed and unhurried approach, and make for memorable family events.

Here Fishy Fishy! Fishing with Kids in Ontario
Remember the old fishing Bert and Ernie skit ? The one where Ernie calls the fish and they jump in the boat? Growing up, I thought that was the secret to great fishing but alas, a little equipment and skill are also required. Rod, reel, fishing line, bait and whole lot of patience are the basics to fishing. Fishing is a wonderful family past time and central and northern Ontario have some of the best fishing in the most beautiful settings. Fishing resorts and lodges are reknowned in Ontario and can be a great family holiday or a family activity everyone should have fun doing.
Many grand fish stories of Ontario include muskellunge, trout, salmon, northern pike, small mouth bass, big mouth bass and so many more fish species. Fishing in Ontario is an all year long event. Fishing derbies and tournaments are big events all over the province. Ontario has over 250,000 lakes, a multitude of rivers and streams that make for some world class fishing. Some of the most exciting fishing is with kids. Have your cameras ready for some great shots! Kids will squeal in delight at the first tug of the line!

I'll be frank in saying that it might take parents to lead the way on this activity. Some kids will be very excited to fish, others not so much and let's face it, the reality is the biggest key here is patience, which is not exactly the first skill honed in children. So, there are definitely some tips in making this a pleasant experience for everyone and for keeping the kids interested. We have listed 8 easy to follow TIPS FOR FISHING WITH KIDS on our website, we hope this helps turn family fishing experiences into happy memories and even bigger fish tales!
